What is HP Nutrition?

HP Nutrition was founded by Helene Patounas in 2012. HP Nutrition delivers personalised nutrition programs and strategies using only the most qualified Nutritional Therapists trained in Functional Medicine and coaching.

We specialise in creating nutrition plans and strategies that are tailored to individuals. No two human beings are the same. We are all biochemically and physiologically unique. That’s why our approach to nutrition is entirely bespoke for each of our clients. Furthermore, we believe the only way to ensure true personalisation is to ensure regular contact between the client and our High Performance Nutrition Specialists in every program we put together. Our High Performance Nutrition Specialists analyse in-depth data for every client to shape the strategies and recommendations that will have the biggest impact on achieving goals.

Who is Helene Patounas?

Helene Patounas, MSc, BSc, is a nutritionist passionate about health and performance. Her mission is to inspire people to make positive change to be the best version of themselves. Her approach to nutrition is science-based, integrating the disciplines of Personalised Nutrition, Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine.

Helene entered the world of nutrition in 2005 in a bid to address health issues of her own. Having experienced the power of nutrition first hand, she wanted to share this with others and positively transform the lives of people through Personalised Nutrition. Personalised Nutrition is a specialist discipline in which the bio-individual needs of each client are investigated, and bespoke nutrition and supplement plans created in order to optimise performance. Helene works with Formula 1 racing drivers, elite athletes, senior executives and high profile individuals.

Helene is the Director of HP Nutrition, is a Clinical and Performance Nutritionist at Hintsa Performance in Geneva and a member of Hintsa’s science team, and is the Performance Nutritionist at the McLaren Performance Academy. She holds a Masters degree in Personalised Nutrition, and a first class degree in Nutritional Therapy. She is also a member of the Royal Society of Medicine. Helene was awarded a distinction for her pioneering piece of research: ‘Optimising Human Performance through Personalised Nutrition’ which she carried out in association with a Formula 1 Team.

What is Personalised Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. Nutritional therapy practitioners use a wide range of tools to assess and identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how these may contribute to an individual’s symptoms and health concerns. This approach allows them to work with individuals to address nutritional balance and help support the body towards maintaining health. Nutritional therapy is recognised as a complementary medicine. Practitioners consider each individual to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

HP Nutrition’s philosophy derives from Functional Medicine. What is Functional Medicine?

Our nutrition programs are science based; the strategy and recommendations we make are derived from our scientific analysis. All of our nutritionists subscribe to the Functional Medicine philosophy. 4 key principles underpin Functional Medicine:

  1. We are all biochemically unique. Health and wellness strategies should be tailored to the individual
  2. What happens within us is connected by a network of relationships; understanding those relationships allows us to see deep into the functioning of the body
  3. Your body is intelligent and has the capacity for self-regulation; it has the ability to heal and prevent diseases of ageing if we eat and live optimally
  4. Health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of immense vitality

Traditional medicine asks the question: ‘what drug matches this disease?’. Functional Medicine asks: ‘Why do we have this problem or lack of function in the first place?’; and ‘What can we do to restore function? (e.g. eating, moving and resting in a more optimal way)’.

What are the key human systems as defined under the Functional Medicine model?

Our testing program focuses on the key systems of the Functional Medicine model, all of which can be significantly enhanced through nutrition:

  • Gut and Digestive Health – a healthy gut is essential in enabling you to absorb the nutrients from your food
  • Energy and Hormones – eating optimally has a huge impact on our ability to generate energy, and regulate our hormones which in turn affect our mood and multiple body and mental systems
  • Inflammation and Immunity – an optimal diet is essential in supporting our immunity and reducing the amount of disease-causing inflammation in the body
  • Detoxification – toxicity in the body is caused by environmental factors and what we eat and drink. Toxicity is associated with disease
  • Mind Health – nutrition can have a profound impact on our cognitive abilities, and health of the brain over the long term
  • Cardiovascular Health and Body Composition – the probability of developing cardiovascular diseases (e.g. heart attacks) can be drastically reduced through nutrition
Who can benefit from a Personalised Nutrition program?

Personalised Nutrition is relevant both for individuals looking to enhance their health, wellbeing and performance, and for those with chronic health conditions wishing to work with a nutritional therapist to improve their particular condition and health in general

Is a Personalised Nutrition Program for me?

We select our High Performance Nutrition Specialists on the basis of both their professional experience, and their ability to interact with clients. Our High Performance Nutrition Specialists also go through the HPN Training Academy which equips our professionals with the skills required to operate at the highest level of the industry.

How many HPN High Performance Nutrition Specialists will work on my HPN program?

We use two High Performance Nutrition Specialists on each HPN program. The Lead Nutritionist is your personal nutritionist. The Lead Nutritionist will conduct all of your consultations, and analysis of your questionnaire, food diary and test results. We also use a Support Nutritionist on each client program. The Support Nutritionist role helps to ensure excellence on the program, by enabling another layer of analysis of your information, to provide the Lead Nutritionist with a second opinion. The Lead and Support Nutritionists discuss each client case before formulating your nutrition strategy outlined in your Personalised High Performance Report (PHPR). Finally, each PHPR is signed off by Helene.

Can HPN’s High Performance Nutrition Specialists work with my doctor?

Yes. HPN High Performance Nutrition Specialists will refer any client with ‘red flag’ signs or symptoms to their medical professional. They will also frequently work alongside a medical professional and will communicate with other healthcare professionals involved in the client’s care to explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided. Any recent health checks carried out by other providers can be analysed and integrated into the nutrition strategy.

What does the HPN High Performance Nutrition program include?

Our High Performance Nutrition Program is typically delivered over 16 weeks, and consists of 1-on-1 consultations, check-in consultations, and rigorous testing and analysis of your biochemistry and DNA (our phlebotomist will visit you at home or work to take blood, urine and saliva samples). We provide you with a Personalised High Performance Report which details the results of our analysis of your test results and health status, and provides you will a full, safe, and sustainable nutrition strategy. You also have 24/7 access to your personal High Performance Nutrition Specialist for the duration of the program.

How do I prepare for the HPN High Performance Nutrition program?

At the beginning of the program, we ask you to complete a questionnaire as well as a 3-day food diary (a record of everything you eat and drink). You’ll probably need to invest an hour of your time in each in total. The questionnaire and food diary form invaluable inputs into the process, and give your High Performance Nutrition Specialists more insight into your medical and performance history, current level of wellbeing, and lifestyle.

How involved is Helene in each program?

Helene is involved in every program. Helene oversees all of our High Performance Nutrition Specialists and ensures that the insights drawn from the scientific analysis are accurate. Helene signs off every Personal High Performance Report.

What happens in a 1-on-1 nutrition consultation?

These are Skype calls between you and your High Performance Nutrition Specialist. Consultations last between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the stage of the process you are at. We have designed a rigorous consultation process which takes you on a journey towards a more optimal level of health and performance. This ranges from investigating your history and lifestyle, to explaining the insights we gain from your nutrition, biochemical and DNA tests, and crafting a full picture of your current status and desired future state. We work with you to set goals, design your personalised nutrition strategy, and coach and educate you to attain those goals.

What happens in a ‘Check-in’ consultation?

Check-ins are shorter calls are designed to drive accountability, remind you of the key elements of your strategy, and enable you to feedback on your program so we can adapt it.

How many consultations will I have over the course of the program?

Our clients usually have 1-on-1 consultations or check-ins every week on the High Performance Nutrition Program. However, we design each program to suit your needs. If you would prefer, and we believe you would benefit from, consultations at a particular frequency, we make this happen.

Do consultations take place face to face or over the phone?

For convenience, our High Performance Nutrition Specialists meet with you over Skype. On our Corporate programs, we will can meet with you at your place of business.

Can I arrange the consultations at a time convenient to me?

Yes. Your High Performance Nutrition Specialist will work with you to arrange a time convenient to you. You can schedule your consultations a week in advance, or lock in the same time every week (this usually works best).

What happens if I need to reschedule my consultation? Can I do this?

To drive accountability, and to encourage you to prioritise your nutrition program (and to keep costs down), we allow you to change the date or time of a consultation only once during the entire program. We want you to put your nutrition program close to the top of your list of priorities, and commit fully to it. Once you’ve changed one appointment, we don’t permit you to make any more changes. If you miss an appointment, you lose the opportunity to consult with your nutritionist on that occasion.

Can I contact my High Performance Nutrition Specialist with questions?

Yes. You can contact your Coach 24/7 via WhatsApp or SMS; they will get back to you within 24 hours.

How likely is it that I will see an improvement in my general level of health and performance as a result of undertaking the HPN High Performance Program?

Very likely; although we cannot guarantee it. If you follow the strategy outlined by your High Performance Nutrition Specialist, it is likely you will see a significant improvement in the way you feel and perform.

Why do I need to submit blood, urine and saliva samples?

All of our clients undertake a range of cutting edge nutrition investigations, which test blood, urine and saliva. We are all biochemically and genetically unique; performing comprehensive analyses of your blood, urine and saliva gives us deep insights into your biochemistry and genetics. We use these insights to create your personalised nutrition strategy.

How advanced is the HP Nutrition testing program?

We have designed an extremely comprehensive and up to date nutrition, biochemical and DNA testing program. We have used our program with clients and teams operating in the most competitive and demanding environments.

How do I submit my blood, urine and saliva, and how long does this process take?

Our phlebotomist visits you at your home or place of work. Drawing the blood takes minutes. You collect your urine first thing in the morning of the blood draw. The whole process takes about 15 minutes. After that, leave it to us. We’ll courier your blood, urine and saliva to the lab, and the analysis will begin.

How do I prepare for the blood, urine and saliva tests?

The preparation is very simple and non-intrusive (please read the full instructions provided in the test kits we will send you). In summary:

  • 4 days before the tests: stop taking any vitamin or other supplements
  • 2 days before the tests: do not over-consume any single food or drink
  • 24 hours before the tests: limit fluid intake to 1.5-2l
  • 8 hours before the tests: do not eat; drink water only

How long does it take to get the test results?

3-4 weeks.

How do I know the test results are accurate?

We use two of the world’s leading laboratories. Both understand that ensuring test results of the highest quality is of paramount importance to both patients and practitioners. Our laboratories are accredited by Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) UK Ltd, which is part of the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Who analyses my blood, urine and saliva to create my personalised nutrition strategy?

There are four steps to this process:

Step 1: Our laboratories conduct a range of scientific tests on your samples. The scientists at the lab produce a detailed quantitative report which compares your results to a typical reference range for a healthy and fully functioning human. The lab scientists provide some commentary around the results to highlight any areas of concern.

Step 2: Our High Performance Nutrition Specialists then spend time analysing not only the test results, but also information you have submitted in your food diary, questionnaire, and consultations. We use two High Performance Nutrition Specialists on each HPN Program. The Lead Nutritionist performs in-depth analysis to draw insight around what diet and lifestyle changes you need to make, and crafts your nutrition strategy. The Support Nutritionist meanwhile does the analysis in parallel in order to provide a second opinion to the Lead Nutritionist.

Step 3: The Lead and Support nutritionists then compare notes, and discuss each client’s case in order to finalise each nutrition strategy (outlined in the Personalised High Performance Report, the PHPR).

Step 4: Finally, each PHPR is signed off by Helene.

Who sees my test results?

Your High Performance Nutrition Specialists and Helene only. We will never share your test results with anyone else.

How secure is the information HPN has about me?

Very secure. We use a market leading secure cloud based storage facility.

Is my information confidential?

Yes. Our High Performance Nutrition Specialists are bound by the same ethical standards as your doctor or lawyer.
